Samantha Flores covered the three-mile dirt course through Menifee in a time of 20:00 to finish first and lead the Paloma Valley High School girls cross country team to victory in a meet involving all six Sunbelt League schools on Wednesday.
Flores, a Menifee 24/7 Athlete of the Week this week, finished 51 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, sophomore Bernadette Schmidt of Elsinore High. The Wildcats also got strong finishes from Stephanie Williams (sixth, 21:21.3) Symone Carreno (eighth, 21:37.7) and Melissa Melchor (ninth, 21:49.5).
In the boys race, Elsinore beat out Paloma Valley for first place as a team. Paloma Valley's top runner was Michael Arreola (fourth, 16:29.2. Zackery Castor finished seventh in 16:46.2.
Alejandro Castellanos of Heritage finished third in the boys race in 16:13.6. In the girls race, Kristen Briseno finished fifth in 21:04.2.
